AIM DECODED

4-1-6. Pilot Visits to Air Traffic Facilities

AIM Text

Pilots are encouraged to participate in local pilot/air traffic control outreach activities. However, due to security and workload concerns, requests for air traffic facility visits may not always be approved. Therefore, visit requests should be submitted through the air traffic facility as early as possible. Pilots should contact the facility and advise them of the number of persons in the group, the time and date of the proposed visit, and the primary interest of the group. The air traffic facility will provide further instructions if a request can be approved.

Research Notes

AIM 4-1-6 covers pilot visits to air traffic facilities — the FAA's program encouraging pilots to tour their local Tower, TRACON, or Center to better understand ATC operations.

Why this exists: The FAA has long recognized that pilot/controller mutual understanding reduces operational errors. A pilot who has seen the tower's perspective is more likely to: read back clearances clearly, anticipate when frequency might be busy, recognize what controllers can and cannot do, and operate in ways that smooth traffic flow.

How to arrange a visit: Contact the facility manager (each tower / TRACON / Center has a public phone number). Most facilities welcome organized visits — flight school groups, EAA chapters, FAASTeam events. Many facilities also accept individual visits with appropriate scheduling.

What to expect: Tower visits typically include cab observation, briefing on local procedures, view of the radar display (at TRACON-equipped towers), and Q&A with controllers. Center visits are more administrative — the controlling positions are in a darkened operations room and access is restricted, but a briefing area / observation gallery is usually available.

Operation Rain Check (AIM 4-1-7): The FAA's structured pilot education program for visiting tower / TRACON facilities. See AIM 4-1-7 for details.
