AviatorCast Episode 104: Wisconsin Fall Flying

Today’s Flight Plan

I just got back from a business trip in Wisconsin for the fall. I’ve done my CFI in Wisconsin in May, and attended AirVenture many times in July, but never did spend time in Wisconsin in Fall.

First off, Redbird Migration was on the list. This is a gathering of like-minded aviation training professionals. During the event we share the newest techniques, hear from speakers, and attend break-out sessions.

Next, I flew up through Door Country to Washington Island where Jessica Voruda and I explored. On a stop on the way back, we found someone had landed gear up. Overall, it was a day of great scenery, grass landings, and good food. That night I also got to see a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient speak at the EAA Museum.

The following day we flew down to Hartford where we visited CubAir Flight. CubAir specializes in training with J3 Cubs. My friend was celebrating his 10 years as a PPL on that very day, so we celebrated by flying Cubs. Later, after a failed attempt at dinner, I’d have a harrowing experience getting my night currency.

The biggest day came last when we visited Wausau to the north, to see John Chmiel and fly in Orange Roughy. It was a blast to fly in a WWII airplane, and see the great culture surrounding that airport. Certainly one of the coolest FBOs I’ve ever been in. That night we attended the gala for the 2017 inductees into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame.

Overall, it was a trip jam-packed with unique aviation experiences.
