AIM Text
Operators may be authorized to take advantage of 50 NM lateral separation in the Gulf of America CTAs when equipped with only a single long-range navigation system. RNP 10 with a single long-range navigation system is authorized via OpSpec, MSpec, or LOA B054. Operators should contact their FSDO or CMO to obtain information on the specific requirements for obtaining B054. Volume 3, chapter 18, section 4 of FAA Order 8900.1 provides the qualification criteria to be used by FAA aviation safety inspectors in issuing B054.

Research Notes
AIM 4-7-4 covers Search and Rescue — the FAA/USCG/USAF system that searches for missing or downed aircraft.
How SAR is initiated:
- Overdue VFR flight plan (filed flight plan not closed within 30 minutes of expected arrival)
- Missing IFR aircraft (no comms/no position reports beyond expected time)
- ELT activation (121.5 or 406 MHz)
- Witness report of aircraft accident
- Spotty radar contact ending suddenly
SAR coordination: AFRCC (Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, Tyndall AFB FL) coordinates inland SAR. RCC (Rescue Coordination Centers, USCG) coordinates over-water SAR.
The pilot's role in preventing unnecessary SAR:
- Close VFR flight plans on arrival (1-800-WX-BRIEF, online portal, or FSS in flight)
- Use ADS-B Out properly so position is recorded
- Consider PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) or InReach for backcountry/remote operations
