FAR DECODED — TITLE 14 CFR

Age, Language, and Pilot Certificate Requirements for a Sport Pilot Instructor

Regulation Text

§ 61.403 What are the age, language, and pilot certificate requirements for a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating?

To be eligible for a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating you must:

(a) Be at least 18 years old.

(b) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English. If you cannot read, speak, write, and understand English because of medical reasons, the FAA may place limits on your certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of light-sport aircraft.

(c) Hold at least a sport pilot certificate with category and class ratings or privileges, as applicable, that are appropriate to the flight instructor privileges sought.

Research Notes

Research Notes — § 61.403 Eligibility: Age, Language, Pilot Certificate

Minimum Age — 18 Years

The minimum age for a sport pilot instructor certificate (18) matches the minimum age for a traditional flight instructor certificate under § 61.183(a). This is consistent with FAA policy that flight instructors must be at least 18 regardless of the certificate category. No exception exists for solo or supervised instruction below age 18.

English Language Requirement

The English language requirement mirrors § 61.183(b) and is a safety-critical provision. Per FAA legal interpretation, the FAA retains authority to place operational limitations on a certificate when English proficiency is medically impaired — the certificate is not denied outright, but operating limitations are imposed. See FAA Chief Counsel Interpretations for current guidance on English proficiency waivers.

Prerequisite Pilot Certificate — Sport Pilot Required

Unlike a traditional CFI who must hold a commercial or ATP certificate (§ 61.183(d)), a sport pilot instructor must hold at least a sport pilot certificate with the appropriate category and class ratings. This creates a key distinction: a sport pilot instructor does NOT need a commercial certificate. The "as applicable" language means the instructor's sport pilot certificate must reflect the specific category/class the instructor seeks to teach in.

NTSB Precedent Context

Several NTSB cases have addressed situations where instructors provided instruction outside their category/class privileges. The prerequisite certificate requirement in § 61.403(c) is enforced: if your sport pilot certificate does not carry privileges for powered parachutes, you cannot instruct in powered parachutes even if you hold a sport pilot instructor certificate for weight-shift control trikes.

Gotcha: Your Sport Pilot Certificate Must Match What You Want to Teach
This catches people off guard. You can't become a sport pilot instructor for powered parachutes if your sport pilot certificate only shows weight-shift control privileges. The certificate you hold going into the instructor application has to already reflect the category and class you want to teach. If you want to instruct in both weight-shift control and powered parachutes, you need sport pilot privileges in both before you can get instructor privileges in both. Plan your certificate path accordingly.

Pro Tip: Same Minimum Age as a Traditional CFI
Sport pilot instructor = traditional CFI on minimum age. Both require 18. If you're working with a younger sport pilot who wants to eventually instruct, make sure they understand this timeline. A 17-year-old can hold a sport pilot certificate; they cannot hold the instructor certificate until they turn 18.
