What Do Runway Markings Mean? A Student Pilot’s Field Guide to the White Paint

Runway markings are the white painted symbols that tell you exactly where to land, how much usable runway you have, and where you must not roll without a clearance. The core set is the runway number and centerline, the threshold stripes that mark the landing surface, the aiming point and touchdown zone bars, plus side stripes that define the runway edges. Every marking is published by the FAA in AIM 2-3-3.

Ever sat at the hold-short line wondering why some stripes are yellow and some are white, or why one runway has a fat painted line across the threshold and the next one does not? Runway markings are a language. Once you can read it, the airport stops being a confusing field of paint and starts telling you a story about where you are, where you can go, and how much room you have to do it. This guide walks through that language the same plain-English way a good instructor would cover it on day one.

Why are runway markings white and taxiway markings yellow?

Runway markings are painted white, and taxiway and other movement-area markings are painted yellow. That single rule is the foundation of reading an airport. The moment you cross from yellow paint onto white paint, you have moved from a taxiway onto a runway, and that distinction is the difference between taxiing and being on a surface where aircraft land and depart at speed.

The FAA codifies this in AIM 2-3-3 and in Advisory Circular AC 150/5340-1, the standard for all airport markings in the United States. Color is intentional and consistent so that the picture looks the same whether you are landing in Anchorage or Atlanta. When you brief a new airport, train your eye to sort the world into white-equals-runway and yellow-equals-taxiway before you even read a single number.

What do the big numbers on the runway mean?

The large number painted at each runway end is the runway designator: the runway’s magnetic alignment rounded to the nearest 10 degrees with the trailing zero removed. A runway aligned to about 270 degrees magnetic is Runway 27; the opposite end, pointing roughly 090 degrees, is Runway 9. The two numbers on a single strip of pavement always differ by 18 (180 degrees apart), because you can land or depart from either direction.

When an airport has parallel runways, a letter is added to the number: L for left, C for center, and R for right (for example, 27L, 27C, 27R). Read from the perspective of an aircraft lined up to use that runway. Because the markings reflect magnetic heading, they occasionally get repainted as Earth’s magnetic field drifts over the years, which is why an old chart can disagree with fresh paint.

What do the runway threshold markings tell you?

Runway threshold markings are the series of long white stripes at the runway end, often called the “piano keys.” They identify the beginning of the runway available for landing. On a standard threshold, the number of stripes encodes runway width: a set pattern of stripes corresponds to specific widths, so a wide air-carrier runway shows more stripes than a narrow GA strip.

Per AIM 2-3-3, threshold markings come in two configurations. The stripe pattern is the most common at paved runways serving instrument and larger operations. Where you see the threshold itself, that is the line you must be at or beyond to touch down on a normal approach. The threshold is also where the displaced-threshold rules kick in, which we will cover in a moment. For the knowledge test, the takeaway is simple: threshold stripes mark where usable landing pavement starts.

What are the aiming point and touchdown zone markings for?

The aiming point marking is the pair of broad, solid white rectangles roughly 1,000 feet down from the threshold. It gives you a fixed visual target to fly toward on final approach. Hold the aiming point in a steady spot in your windscreen on a stabilized approach and that is the point on the pavement you are flying at — your wheels then touch down a bit beyond it as you flare.

The touchdown zone markings are the groups of one, two, and three rectangular bars arranged symmetrically in pairs about the centerline, with the pairs spaced at 500-foot intervals. They identify the touchdown zone for landing, and the descending count of bars gives you a quick read on how far down the runway you are. You will find the full set on larger instrument runways; many small GA runways have neither aiming point nor touchdown zone markings, and that is normal. AIM 2-3-3 describes both in detail.

What does a displaced threshold mean for a pilot?

A displaced threshold is a landing threshold relocated down the runway from the physical start of the pavement, marked by white arrows pointing toward a solid white threshold bar that stretches across the runway. The pavement behind the bar is still pavement, but it is not available for landing, usually because of an obstacle on approach, noise, or terrain.

Here is the part students mix up: the area before a displaced threshold can still be used for taxi, takeoff roll, and landing rollout in the appropriate direction — you just cannot touch down there when landing toward that threshold. Contrast that with chevrons (yellow Vs), which mark a blast pad or stopway that is not usable for any normal operation. When you see arrows leading to a bar, think “land beyond the bar.” When you see yellow chevrons, think “stay off entirely.”

A common student trap is fixating on those painted arrows and starting the flare early, trying to grease it onto the paint instead of flying to the runway. The fix is simple: ignore the arrows as a touchdown reference entirely and fly the aiming point past the bar. The arrows tell you where not to land; the bar tells you where the usable runway begins.

What do the centerline and side stripes do?

The runway centerline is the row of uniformly spaced white dashes running the length of the runway, marking the geometric center for takeoff, landing, and rollout alignment. On takeoff you track it with rudder; on landing you aim to roll out straight down it. It is your primary lateral reference once the wheels are on the ground.

The side stripes (also called edge markings) are the continuous white lines that define the lateral limits of the full-strength runway surface. They tell you where the usable, load-bearing pavement ends and shoulder or non-load-bearing surface begins. Per AC 150/5340-1, side stripes are used where there is a need to contrast the runway edge with adjoining shoulders, common on runways with paved shoulders that could be mistaken for usable surface in low visibility.

How do runway holding position markings keep you safe?

Runway holding position markings are the two solid and two dashed yellow lines painted across a taxiway where it meets a runway. The solid lines are on the side away from the runway. The rule that prevents most runway incursions: when the solid lines are on your side, you stop and hold, you may not cross onto the runway without a clearance at a towered field, or without confirming the runway is clear at a non-towered field.

Alongside the painted lines you will see a red-and-white runway holding position sign showing the runway designators (for example “27-9”). These markings and signs are exactly what PLT141 tests, and reading them correctly on an airport diagram is PLT077 territory. Hold-short markings are yellow, not white, because they live on the taxiway side. Never get sloppy about which side the solid lines are on. That one detail is what keeps you out of an active runway.
