A military operations area (MOA) is a type of special use airspace established to separate certain military training activities — such as air combat maneuvers, aerobatics, and low-altitude tactics — from IFR traffic. A flight of fighters maneuvering at several hundred knots is a very real hazard to a Cessna, and the only protection you have is your own eyes and your radio.

Every MOA has a name rather than a number — names like “Sells MOA” or “Birmingham MOA” — and that name ties the airspace to a published block of information listing its altitudes, hours of operation, and the controlling agency. You’ll find that block in the chart margin or the Chart Supplement.

When an MOA is not in use, the airspace simply reverts to the underlying class — usually Class E or Class G — and you fly through it like any other piece of sky. The trick, as always, is knowing for certain whether it’s cold before you commit.

Why do military operations areas exist?

Military operations areas exist to give military pilots a defined block of airspace for training that doesn’t mix well with civilian instrument traffic. Air combat maneuvering, aerobatics, and high-speed low-level work all require aggressive, unpredictable flight paths. Per AIM 3-4-5, the MOA confines that activity so air traffic control can keep IFR traffic clear without shutting down the airspace entirely.

Think about what military training actually looks like. Two jets engaged in air combat maneuvers might climb, dive, and reverse direction in seconds, pulling several Gs and changing heading by 180 degrees before you could finish a radio call. There is no way to predict where they’ll be from one moment to the next. You cannot weave instrument traffic through that, so the FAA carves out a named area and tells IFR pilots to plan around it.

For VFR pilots, the system handles things differently. Rather than barring you, the rules count on see-and-avoid and on you knowing the airspace is there. That’s why the MOA is charted, why its hours are published, and why every airspace lesson hammers the same point: an MOA is a place to be extra alert, not a place to relax because no one is making you ask permission.

Can you legally fly through an MOA as a VFR pilot?

The MOA breaks that pattern — the door is legally open, and a lot of new pilots take that as a green light when it’s really a yellow one.

How do you find an MOA on a sectional chart?

You find an MOA on a sectional chart by looking for a magenta hatched boundary line and the MOA’s name printed in magenta inside it. The hatching marks the edge of the area, and the name — such as “Gladden MOA” — ties it to a tabulated block, usually along the chart margin, that lists the altitudes, hours of use, and controlling agency.

Read that block carefully, because it tells you the three things that decide whether the MOA even matters for your flight. First, the vertical limits: an MOA has a floor and a ceiling, so a flight cruising below the floor or above the ceiling may never touch it. Second, the times of use, which tell you when it’s normally scheduled to be active. Third, the controlling agency you’d contact to confirm the real status.

A real lesson from the Alaska bush

I learned to respect MOAs the boring way — by almost treating one like it was no big deal. I was working a 172 across a stretch of Alaska with an MOA sitting right across the direct line, and the charted hours said it should have been cold that afternoon. The temptation was the usual one: punch straight through, save the fifteen minutes, the chart says it’s fine.

Out of pure habit, I called up for flight following before I got near it. The controller came back and told me the MOA had gone active early — there was military traffic working it, and would I like vectors around the south edge. Nothing out the windshield looked any different. Same empty blue Alaska sky. But somewhere in that block, fast traffic was maneuvering, and I had been about to fly a Cessna straight into it because a printed time said I could.
