No pilot certificate, rating, or clearance authorizes a Private Pilot to fly through it.

That last point is what makes prohibited airspace unique. Most of the airspace you’ll learn about has a way in. Class B wants a clearance. A restricted area wants you to check whether it’s active and coordinate with the controlling agency. Prohibited airspace has no such door. The Aeronautical Information Manual covers it in AIM 3-4-2, and the rule is binary: you’re either outside it or you’re in violation.

Each prohibited area carries a designator — the letter P followed by a number, like P-40 or P-56. Why does prohibited airspace exist?

Prohibited airspace exists to protect the ground, not the airplane. While a restricted area shields you from a hazard in the sky, a prohibited area shields a sensitive location on the surface from being overflown at all. The reason given in the regulation is “national security or welfare” — and the sites it protects make that obvious the moment you see them.

The most famous example is P-56, which sits over the heart of Washington, D.C. It covers the White House, the Capitol, the National Mall, and the Naval Observatory (the Vice President’s residence). P-40 covers Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. These aren’t places where the government wants to gamble on a wayward Cessna.

Because the threat is on the ground, the prohibition is total and permanent. There’s no activity to schedule around because the thing being protected never goes away. That’s the mental model to carry into your checkride: restricted equals hazard in the air with a schedule; prohibited equals protected site on the ground with no schedule and no entry.

How do I find prohibited airspace on a sectional chart?

You find prohibited airspace the same way you find every special use area — by reading the chart before you ever start the engine. Prohibited areas appear on VFR sectional and terminal area charts as a boundary outlined in blue hatching, labeled with a “P-” designator, and cross-referenced in a special use airspace tabulation box printed on the chart margin. That box lists the number, the altitudes, the time of use, and the controlling agency.

Pull up any sectional covering Washington, D.C., and you’ll see P-56 drawn right over the city. Run your eye to the tabulation box and you’ll find P-56A and P-56B listed with their altitudes (“To FL180” or “SFC to unlimited,” depending on the area) and the note that they’re in effect continuously. The good news: avoiding this is entirely within your control. Prohibited areas don’t move, they don’t turn on and off, and they’re printed clearly on every chart.
