What Is a High-Performance Endorsement? The 200-Horsepower Rule Explained

A high-performance endorsement is a one-time logbook sign-off from a flight instructor that lets you act as pilot in command of a high-performance airplane — one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. It is not a separate certificate or rating. The rule lives in 14 CFR § 61.31(f): you train in a high-performance airplane, then your CFI signs your logbook.

What makes an airplane “high-performance”?

The FAA defines a high-performance airplane in 14 CFR § 61.31(f): one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. That is the entire test — a single number tied to rated engine power. It has nothing to do with how fast the airplane flies, how much it weighs, or how high it climbs. An airplane with exactly 200 horsepower is not high-performance; it has to be more than 200.

Where students get tripped up is multi-engine math. The rule reads “an engine of more than 200 horsepower,” so it looks at each engine individually, not the combined total. A light twin with two 180-horsepower engines adds up to 360 horsepower, but because no single engine exceeds 200, it is not a high-performance airplane by this definition.

Most primary trainers stay well under the line. A Cessna 172 (around 160–180 horsepower) and a Piper Cherokee (often 160 horsepower) are not high-performance. Step up to a Cessna 182 Skylane (typically 230 horsepower) or a Cirrus SR22 (310 horsepower) and you cross the threshold.

The number that matters is the engine’s rated horsepower, found in the type certificate data sheet and the pilot’s operating handbook — not a marketing figure. When you are not sure, that document is the authority.

What are the regulatory requirements for the endorsement?

To earn a high-performance endorsement under 14 CFR § 61.31(f), you must receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor in a high-performance airplane (or an approved full flight simulator or flight training device), and that instructor must find you proficient to operate a high-performance airplane. The regulation sets no minimum number of hours — proficiency is the standard, not a clock.

You already need to hold at least the appropriate category and class rating on your pilot certificate for the airplane you are flying. The endorsement does not grant a new category or class. If you are rated for airplane single-engine land, the high-performance endorsement opens the high-performance single-engine-land airplanes within that rating.

The instructor’s logbook entry is the endorsement itself. Both endorsements are one-time and permanent, and both require ground and flight training plus an instructor’s proficiency finding. What will I actually learn during high-performance training?

High-performance training teaches you to manage a bigger engine smoothly and to keep the airplane ahead of you when everything happens faster. More horsepower means more thrust on takeoff, stronger left-turning tendencies, faster acceleration, and a higher cruise speed — all of which compress your timeline in the pattern and on departure. The core skill is anticipating the airplane instead of reacting to it.

Expect to spend real time on the powerplant. Many high-performance airplanes pair that bigger engine with a constant-speed propeller and richer fuel-management needs, so you will practice setting manifold pressure and RPM together, leaning correctly, and watching cylinder head and exhaust gas temperatures.
