Research Notes — § 61.425 Sport Pilot Instructor Renewal

Renewal Period — 24 Months

A flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating expires 24 calendar months from the month in which it was issued or most recently renewed. This is the same renewal cycle as a traditional flight instructor certificate under § 61.197. "Calendar month" means the last day of the 24th month following issuance — an instructor certificate issued in March 2024 expires on March 31, 2026, regardless of the day of issuance.

Renewal Pathways

§ 61.425 outlines acceptable renewal methods. These generally include: (1) passing a practical test for the renewal of the certificate or for an additional rating; (2) presenting a record showing graduation from an FAA-approved flight instructor refresher clinic (FIRC) within the preceding 3 calendar months; (3) presenting a record from an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) showing successful completion of a 24-month recurrency review; or (4) submitting a record of having passed a practical test for a new FAA rating within the preceding 24 months. FIRCs are the most commonly used renewal pathway.

Flight Instructor Refresher Clinics (FIRCs)

FIRCs are FAA-approved courses — available in both in-person and online formats — that satisfy the renewal requirement for flight instructor certificates. The FAA maintains a list of approved FIRC providers. Upon completion, the provider issues a graduation certificate that the instructor presents to the FAA for certificate renewal. Online FIRCs have expanded the accessibility of this pathway dramatically.

FAA Renewal Process

After completing a qualifying renewal activity, the instructor submits documentation to their local FSDO (or via IACRA, depending on the renewal pathway) to receive an updated certificate. The renewal must be completed before the expiration date; there is no grace period. An expired instructor certificate means zero instructor privileges — endorsements given after expiration are invalid.

AOPA FIRC Reference

AOPA's FIRC directory lists approved courses with details on format, cost, and provider. Most sport pilot instructors find online FIRCs the most convenient renewal pathway.

Gotcha: Expired Means Nothing You Sign Is Valid
An expired flight instructor certificate — whether it's a traditional CFI or a sport pilot instructor certificate — means you have no instructor privileges. Any endorsement signed after the expiration date is invalid. Any instruction given after expiration is unauthorized. The FAA doesn't send renewal reminders. Set a calendar alert 90 days before your certificate expires and complete the FIRC or other renewal pathway well ahead of the deadline. Don't let this slip.

Pro Tip: Online FIRCs Are the Fastest Path to Renewal
For most sport pilot instructors, the online FIRC is the go-to renewal tool. You can complete it on your schedule without traveling to a weekend clinic. AOPA's FIRC, Gleim's online FIRC, and several other providers are FAA-approved. Budget 8-16 hours for the coursework. Complete it, get your graduation certificate, submit to IACRA or your FSDO, and you're renewed for another 24 months. Start this process at least 30 days before expiration to allow for administrative processing time.
