Regulation Text
No person may operate an airplane over-the-top or at night under VFR unless that airplane is equipped with the instruments and equipment required for IFR operations under § 91.205(d) and one electric landing light for night operations. Each required instrument and item of equipment must be in operable condition.
Research Notes
Section 91.507 — Equipment requirements: Over-the-top or night VFR operations — adds equipment requirements for large and turbine-powered multiengine airplanes operating over-the-top or under night VFR conditions.
What's required: Beyond the basic VFR equipment of § 91.205, large/turbine multiengine aircraft conducting over-the-top or night VFR ops must have additional navigation and instrument equipment appropriate for the conditions.
Practical scope: Most large turbine aircraft are IFR-equipped and operate IFR routinely — making § 91.507 largely subsumed by the IFR equipment requirements of § 91.205(d).
