A tailwheel endorsement is a logbook sign-off from an authorized flight instructor stating you’ve received flight training in a tailwheel airplane and are proficient in it. Here’s the part that surprises people: there’s no checkride, no written exam, no minimum number of hours, and nothing added to your pilot certificate. A “tailwheel airplane” — sometimes called a conventional-gear airplane or a “taildragger” — is simply an airplane with two main wheels up front and a small wheel under the tail. That’s the opposite of the tricycle-gear arrangement most students train in, where the third wheel sits up under the nose.

Why do tailwheel airplanes need a special endorsement?

Tailwheel airplanes need a special endorsement because their center of gravity sits behind the main wheels, which makes them directionally unstable on the ground. A tricycle-gear airplane wants to roll straight; a tailwheel airplane wants to swap ends. That tendency — called a ground loop — is why the FAA requires specific training before you fly one as PIC.

Here’s the physics in plain terms. On a nosewheel airplane, the heavy part of the airplane is in front of the mains, so any swerve gets damped out — the airplane self-corrects. On a tailwheel airplane, the heavy part is behind the mains. Start a swerve and the mass behind the pivot point wants to keep going, accelerating the turn instead of stopping it. Left unchecked during the takeoff or landing roll, that becomes a ground loop, where the airplane spins around its vertical axis and a wingtip can drag.

The fix is the pilot. Tailwheel flying demands active, anticipatory feet on the rudder pedals from the moment you start the takeoff roll until the airplane is parked. The endorsement exists to make sure someone competent taught you those feet before you went out alone.

What does the regulation actually require?

14 CFR § 61.31(i) requires that, before acting as PIC of a tailwheel airplane, you receive and log flight training from an authorized instructor in a tailwheel airplane, and that the instructor finds you proficient and endorses your logbook. The training must cover three specific areas, with no minimum hours attached.

The regulation spells out exactly what the flight training must include:

The endorsement itself follows standard FAA endorsement language. AC 61-65 (the FAA’s advisory circular on certification of pilots and flight and ground instructors) provides the recommended wording instructors use so the logbook entry is unambiguous.

How do you get a tailwheel endorsement?

You get a tailwheel endorsement by finding a CFI and a tailwheel airplane, then training until that instructor signs your logbook. There’s no application, no scheduling with the FAA, and no test to pass. The process is entirely between you and your instructor, who decides when you’ve reached proficiency in the required maneuvers.

In practice, the path looks like this. You already hold at least a Sport, Recreational, or Private Pilot certificate — the endorsement is added on top of an existing certificate, not earned from zero. You find an instructor who teaches tailwheel (often in a Cub, Champ, Citabria, Decathlon, or Husky). You fly dual instruction focused on the three required areas: takeoffs and landings (normal and crosswind), wheel landings, and go-arounds.

Most of the work is in your feet. Your instructor will have you doing taxi work, then takeoffs holding the centerline with rudder, then three-point landings, then wheel landings. Crosswind technique gets real attention here, because a crosswind that a nosewheel pilot shrugs off can start a ground loop in a taildragger.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

There’s no fixed timeline because the regulation sets proficiency — not hours — as the standard, but many pilots earn the endorsement in roughly 5 to 10 hours of dual instruction. Pilots with strong rudder habits or prior taildragger exposure may need less; pilots who’ve flown only nosewheel airplanes for years sometimes need more.

Cost tracks directly with those hours, plus the type of airplane and your local instructor rates. A vintage Cub or Champ rents cheaper than a Decathlon or Husky, and rates vary a lot by region. The honest answer is that it’s one of the more affordable add-ons in aviation, because there’s no examiner fee, no test fee, and no separate FAA charge — you’re paying for airplane and instructor time only.

Don’t rush it. The number that matters isn’t the hour total on the invoice — it’s whether your feet have learned to dance on the rudder pedals without you thinking about it. Some of the best money you’ll spend in aviation is the extra hour that turns “I can do it when I concentrate” into “I do it automatically.”

Do you ever need a tailwheel endorsement again? Currency & exceptions

No — a tailwheel endorsement is a one-time, permanent logbook entry that never expires. Once an authorized instructor signs it, you hold it for life. There is no renewal, no recurring sign-off, and no currency requirement specific to the endorsement itself under 14 CFR § 61.31(i).

That said, two things are worth separating. The endorsement is permanent, but your proficiency is not. Tailwheel skills fade fast when they sit. If you haven’t flown a taildragger in a year, a couple of hours with an instructor is smart insurance against an expensive ground loop — even though the reg doesn’t force you to do it.

There’s also a grandfather clause. Under 14 CFR § 61.31(i)(2), a pilot who logged pilot-in-command time in a tailwheel airplane before April 15, 1991, is not required to hold the endorsement. If that’s you, the regulation already considers you qualified — though as always, proficiency is a separate question from legality.

One more clarification pilots ask about: this is the same one-time-endorsement model used for high-performance and complex airplanes under 14 CFR § 61.31(e) and (f). Earn it once, it’s yours. The normal flight-review and currency rules under 14 CFR § 61.56 and § 61.57 still apply on top, just as they do for any flying.

A grass strip in Texas: what tailwheel taught me

I earned my tailwheel endorsement in Texas, and I’ll be honest — the first hour humbled me. I’d been flying nosewheel airplanes for years, comfortable, current, no problem holding a centerline.
