Research Notes

Section 91.331 — Establishing requirements for aerobatic flight contests, demonstrations, or shows — provides FAA authorization for organized aerobatic events.

The Certificate of Waiver framework: Aerobatic contests and airshows operate under § 91.193 Certificate of Waiver authorizations. The waiver specifies the location, altitude floor (typically below the normal 1,500 AGL minimum of § 91.303), proximity to spectators, and qualified pilots.

The airshow box: The 'aerobatic box' is the volume of airspace within which aerobatic maneuvering is authorized. The box has lateral, vertical, and proximity-to-crowd boundaries. Pilots must stay within the box during their performance.
